Classical Guitar Lessons
Playing classical guitar is an elusive style for many guitar players rooted in rock and blues playing. However, it's not unattainable as a bit of disciplined study and organization will go a long way to realizing this goal. Stage one is a great place to start.
These pieces will introduce the student to the fretboard and to classical technique.
However, they are also intended to be READING exercises for any student seeking to improve their reading skills. Tab has its place, just not here!
As of yet, I can only include the music with the tab. This will change shortly.
Since all GuitarSteve students are on the honor system, you are expected to print out only the standard notation and NOT the TAB.
Quick checklist for correct technique:
Fret Hand:
Palm parallel to the neck. Don't hold hand at and angle.
Palm not touching the neck.
Play on tips of fingers.
Picking Hand:
Most challenges involve the picking hand.
Keep it light and relaxed, as if your hand has fallen asleep (minus the numbness). Do not fret any notes at first as this will cause sympathetic tension in the picking hand. Practice playing notes this way to get a feel for keeping you hand relaxed. This is the biggest problem I encounter with students and tension in the picking hand will absolutely sabotage your technique.
Thumb forward/ fingers back.
Play on the corner of the i,m,a fingers, where the flesh meets the nail. Use side of the finger that's closest to the neck.
The thumb and the index should form an an "X" when you look down at your hand.
Don't grab and pull at strings. For now, learn to relax your hand and move fingers i,m,a from the big knuckle.
Aim your i,m,a fingertips towards the wrist. While you obviously can't touch the wrist, this will reinforce the motion from the big knuckle and prevent you
from flexing the finger either:
Outward towards the back out the hand, or
Contracting tightly inward towards the end of the palm where it meets the fingers.
Holding the guitar:
Raise the foot of whichever leg you rest the guitar on.
Obviously, you'll want to hold the guitar in the traditional classical way and rest the guitar on the fretboard side leg. However, go to YouTube and look up videos by Grisha Goryachev and you'll see him resting the guitar on the opposite leg. This is a traditional flamenco posture and does not impede his technique as Grisha is most likely the most technically gifted flamenco guitarist in the world. I would suggest using the traditional classical approach for students learning classical guitar and the casual approach (resting the waist of the guitar on the picking hand side leg) when learning non-classical material.

Stage 2
These pieces are intended as a logical progression from those in Stage 1.
The emphasis here is on polyphony (two or more notes at a time).
Again, do not use the TAB. Read the standard notation.
All of my younger students (as young as 8) all read standard notation.
So, no excuses. READ THE NOTES.
